The New England Journal of Medicine, like Dr Snyderman, blames the disease outbreaks in the US on declining vaccination rates. And like Dr Snyderman the June issue of the journal Pediatrics revealed that the number of reported pertussis cases jumped from 1,000 in 1976 to 26,000 in 2004. However, what THEY fail to disclose in their attempt to scare you into vaccinating your child is that vaccinated children make up 89% of reported pertusiss cases. So, almost all of the pertussis cases are from kids who have already been vaccinated. They actually found similar statistics in the measles outbreaks several years ago.. vaccinated children were getting the measles. It is unfortunate that the media must omit such pertinent facts in its fear based reporting to create a stigma that vaccines are 100% safe. In viewing the Vaccine Injury Compensation website the claims for death from the DTaP vaccine currently sits at 80, with another 695 death claims for the DTP vaccine.
The study authors didn't blame the anti-vaccine movement for the 89% of the cases of pertussis affecting vaccinated kids, they said unvaccinated kids were just more likely to get pertussis. It is well known by the CDC that the problem is the pertussis vaccine itself, not the parents who choose not to vaccinate. And let's remember a key fact here, pro safe vaccination is not automatically anti vaccine! Dr Synderman refuses to acknowledge there is a difference on her endless rants where she accusses those that don't vaccinate as "crazy people" (her most recent demise on live TV!). I must admit, her bias on the subject of vaccines can be googled tenfold.. only to be outdone by Dr Offit!
